Advice: Giving Newbies A Good Blog Start

As you know I love the look(or behind the computer screen look) of new bloggers stepping into the arena of social media.  They are excited they post everyday and they are hungry.  I have been blogging a couple of years now and there are some things I wish I had known.  Here are a few:

  • Talk about what you already know and love.  Your blog can grow with you.
  • Doing reviews is not the only way to get traffic to your site. So don't think you have to do them.
  • Meet the people in your community.  Read their blogs(even the archived posts)
  • Set goals for your blog.
  • If you are not on Twitter, get on it and use it.
These are just a few.  I asked my Twitter friends this: If you have blogged for more than six months, what advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Check out their responses:

  1. Marcy theglamlife
@KeepItClassyJen ...(cont) mine is "30 seconds of happy". So readers know NEARLY everytime they click in they will get what they expect.
  2. Marcy theglamlife
@KeepItClassyJen Have a 'thesis'...so that the reader gets a sense of consistency with every visit...for example...
  3. Jason Perrierjasonperrier
@KeepItClassyJen One word of advice - have a list of topics to draw from so when you can't think of anything to write you are not stuck.
  4. calandro5calandro5
@KeepItClassyJen You are such a support to the bloggers, Jen. Thanks for all you do. I hope you are well.
  5. calandro5calandro5
@KeepItClassyJen From someone just past six months, don't try to do everything at once and develop your voice. Allow you presence to grow.
  6. Krystal Grantkrystalgrant
@KeepItClassyJen read and leave comments on lots of blogs
  7. KenmoreKenmoreConnect
@KeepItClassyJen Participate in the communities you want to be a part of. Read, comment, and talk to your fellow bloggers!
  8. Khrys Vaughanherstartup
    @KeepItClassyJen keep going!
  9. Alexis N. Karlinakarlin
@KeepItClassyJen be patient... and invite people to critique your first couple of posts.
  10. melissa_amelissa_austin
@KeepItClassyJen Stick with it. It takes some time to get your blog out there.

I am really good at this

Hi there.  Remember me?  Well I know I have been MIA but I have an excuse really I do.  You know how much I talk about the whole Social Media Inward thing, right?  Well, it's been going really well for me lately.

This is from the Social Media Inward class
I held earlier his month at the St. Tammany Art Association.
It was way too much fun to see the excitement in their faces.

Since that class, I have brought on three new clients.
Two of them were attendees and realize the power of SM(yay them and me).
Want to know who they are?

  1. @USFG- We are building an amazing mom blog directory within their 500+ sites.  I am going to be reaching out to bloggers that are in this directory for affiliate programs, tickets to live concerts in your city and so much more!  You should follow them on Twitter, FB and add your blog...all the cool kids are doing it!  http://bit.ly/submityourblog
  2. @PWAT_SLIDELL-This a really neat franchise that let's you enjoy a fun night out of painting and a little wine drinking(come on who doesn't love that combo).  I know you are thinking well I can't paint...they teach you to make such pretty painting for affordable prices.  I'm in love with the concept so this one is fun for me!
  3. The third is still under wraps and I will let you know about them soon.  What I can tell you is that I had the most lovely meeting with the owner Friday.  We went to a tea house in the downtown part of Covington.  It was so quaint and lovely.  I'm not a big tea drinker(I actually don't even like it) but something about being in this place made me feel like a little girl and an imaginary tea party with teddy bears.
**************

A lot of people emailed, texted or commented about my last post.  Some thought I was sad.  I'm not.  I think I just realized that I am great at what I do regardless of the catty people in the online world.  I love teaching people about social media and making money doing it locally is really doing it for me.  I am very lucky to also have an online company that I represent.  I just found my comfortable and happy place and know that doesn't mean in everyone's face online like some try to do.  Be true to yourself is the best way to go.

Love you guys, MUAH!

Shoot for the moon

In my life I have always tried to the best at whatever it was in my life.  Love, work, school, being a mom.  I guess I have finally come to the point where I realized the best is not always what it cut out for that particular situation.  I've learned that shooting for the stars is almost better than the moon....stars you can still wish upon, right?

I will still excel in what I do but with the ability now to know it's okay to not meet every expectation.  I will still love with all that I have, work like a mad woman, learn from those who teach, and laugh at the little person who is right next to me talking about the stars.

Social Media Inward-Helping them learn.

Some of you may know that last week I taught a class on Social Media Inward(my term for teaching local businesses about social media). Can I just say it was amazing. I have taught bloggers online for over a year how to ease into social media. I have also taught companies the best way to engage with bloggers but this was different. I had the opportunity to show local businesses an innovative way to market their business. Am I an expert? Well, no. I have found that the more mistakes I make the more I learn.

I started first with the fact that social media does not mean just Twitter and Facebook. That is what most people think. I helped them think outside the traditional media box into something new and refreshing. They got it and craved more. I think for me that was the best part(and has always been).

I plan to teach this two day course again in June and anticipate the new group that will come in with wide eyes. I found what makes me happy and work that drives me to learn more. Have you found your outlet online that does the same for you? What is it?
