OfficeMax: Nominate a teacher to WIN $100 gift card

UPDATE: WINNER...She said:

I'm nominating my son, Jared Fox, who is a high school English teacher in Jefferson Parish in New Orleans. Jared applied to Teach for America his senior year in college and was chosen to teach in a financially challenged area of the country. Jared spent the first few weeks of school outfitting some of his needier students with notebooks and paper out of his own pocket. Jared is sharing his love of English with his students and it is heartwarming to see his enthusiasm and pride in his students and his new school.

Mark Indelicato-OfficeMax-A Day Made Better-Education-School Supplies
Did you know teachers spend an average of $1200 of their own money on classroom supplies each year? That’s $4 billion annually! That's why OfficeMax joined with Adopt-A-Classroom to create "A Day Made Better"—a national cause event founded to erase teacher-funded classrooms. This year, “A Day Made Better” will take place on October 6 where 1,000 teachers will be surprised in their classrooms each with $1,000 worth of essential supplies from OfficeMax. That’s more than one million dollars donated to help teachers! Principals at needy schools nominated the teachers for demonstrating dedication, innovation, and passion.

To pay-it-forward, OfficeMax and Mom It Forward have teamed up to create awareness about the issue of teacher-funded classrooms and to give you the opportunity to get involved and help a teacher in your community on behalf of the “A Day Made Better.” Here’s how…

Simply nominate a teacher of your choice to win this giveaway by following the entry requirements. Be sure to check out the prize and criteria!

Prize

One exceptional teacher will receive a ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR gift card to OfficeMax. This can go a long way when it comes to classroom supplies!

Criteria

Teacher-Education-OfficeMax-A Day Made BetterThis is a giveaway that is meant to be given away. What does that mean? You get to nominate a teacher by sharing why this person is exceptional and deserving of this giveaway. The best part, every story told helps raise awareness in an effort to erase teacher-funded classrooms. The winning teacher will be chosen based on the following criteria, so be sure to tell us why your teacher is most deserving:
  • Dedication: does everything in his/her power to deliver the best possible education for his/her students.
  • Innovation: thinks outside the box and engages his/her students through creative learning activities & programs.
  • Passion: expresses a genuine passion for education and shares this enthusiasm in the classroom.
  • Need: demonstrates a need for essential classroom supplies.

Entry Requirements

To enter your teacher, you are required to do two things.

(Note: post a separate comment for each entry.)

1. Please leave a comment nominating a teacher and tell how they would benefit from $100 OfficeMax giftcard.

2. Post the messages below on Facebook and/or Twitter.

5 Things to Consider in Your Blog Pep Talk

Building a blog that people are truly engaged by can sometimes be side-swiped by people telling you what your blog must have. Must have? There is no such thing and that is the beauty of blogs. Here are a few things I would consider when giving yourself the "I need to build my blog" pep talk.

  1. Stats- Unique Views, Hits, Average Time On Site...these are all just shallow ways someone is judging your site. Think of it in this way. A new person walks into Starbucks daily. They also get their daily customer. Some people even sit for a while using their Wifi. Yes, there coffee is pretty good. BUT, what about that Mom and Pop shop on the corner of that other street. The one you know the owner. She asks you about how your daughter did on her first day of preschool. She talks to you because she genuinely cares. She is there everyday putting her heart into her shoppe. She does not have a lot of "hits" or "views" but her content is amazing.
  2. Comments-It is okay if you do not have 20+ comments on each post. There are a lot of times that I visit a blog and absolutely love what I am reading but then I am interrupted by my son trying to jump off of my sofa. Not that it scares me that he may break a bone but I know my hubby would flip out. Then I would have to explain what happened which would not be fun. See how I lost track of what I was telling you?? It happens while reading some of the best content and we simply lose track and forget to comment. We all have lives and forgetting to comment on a blog does not mean we are not listening. We are. Continue to write those fabulous commentless posts.
  3. Controversy Posting: Do not get yourself caught up in the lastest news or blogosphere controversy just to drive people to your site. It is just stupid and you look stupid jumping on the bandwagon. With that said, if you have something you are passionate about and it happens to be in the news then by all means go ahead. Do not talk just to ruffle feathers. No one will listen.
  4. Blogger vs Wordpress: I hear all of the time from people,"I am taking the next step in blogging and moving to Wordpress!" Really? The next step. Then I ask why and hear silence. I have used both Blogger and Wordpress and honestly I think it is up to you to decide which you like better. FYI-simply moving from Blogger to Wordpress will not instantly make your blog better so if that is what you were thinking....#fail.
  5. The Man Behind The Curtain: Keep in mind we are coming to read your blog because we are interested in getting to know YOU better. Yes you...the one that hides behind those amazing posts. We want to know the REAL you so be sure convey that person in your writing. If you are the sweetest person in the world...great. If you are a comedian.....great. If you are snarky(raising my hand)....great. Will everyone like you....probably not. One thing you can be sure of though, if you show who the man behind the curtain truly is people will know you are here.

Nano Shoots Video...WoOhOo

The fabulous Steve Jobs announced a few things today that I know has everyone super excited!    I know she is for sure!  One of the coolest things in my book is the new Nano capabilities-Video, Live Pause, and FM radio($149 8G).  The only bad thing I can see about the video option is that you can not upload the video immediately because it does not have wifi.  Still, the Nano is a better option that a bigger camera(ie Flip, Vado).

A couple other announcements were:
(Via By The Associated Press)

PRICE CUTS, STORAGE EXPANSION: The 8 GB model of the iPod Touch — basically an iPhone without the phone capabilities — now costs $199, or $30 less. Apple kept prices constant for its larger models, but doubled the storage space; a 32 GB version now goes for $299 and a 64 GB model for $399.
COLORFUL SHUFFLES: The tiny $79, 4 GB Shuffle now comes in silver, black, pink, blue and green. A smaller, less expensive version was added — $59 for a 2 GB model, also in multiple colors.
BEEFIER CLASSIC: The traditional iPod model now has a 160 GB hard drive for the existing $249 price — a 40 GB boost in storage.
ITUNES UPGRADE: ITunes 9 cleans up the software design, gives people more control over what gets loaded on to iPods and iPhones and introduces a way to organize applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It also lets five computers on the same home network share — by streaming or copying — music, video and other content, a departure from the strict copy protection Apple insisted on in the past.
DIGITAL ALBUMS: ITunes will now sell some albums packaged with digital photography, cover art, liner notes and other media reminiscent of the days of vinyl. ITunes LP can include interviews and other video, all of which can be viewed through iTunes. It's a way for recording companies to boost album sales as online stores make it easier to buy songs individually.
So are you excited too???
